Slowly I placed one foot in front of the other. My lungs were struggling to supply the oxygen that I required. I kept my eyes focused on the path in front of me. Then I exclaimed, "Wow, look at this one" and bent down to pick up a Cambrian trilobite encased in shale. I held the trilobite and glanced out at the surrounding hills. The hike was worth it for the view alone but we were here primarily to look at Burgess Shale. At the upper quarry site I was greeted by many encouraging smiles and cheers of "well done". The hike was difficult for me but, hey, it was part of being a volunteer. Actually, activities like this are the best part about being a CSPG volunteer.

Since arriving to do a PhD at the University of Calgary I have volunteered with both the CSPG and CSEG at many conventions in various capacities. My student income or lack thereof encouraged me to take advantage of free registration for student volunteers. I continue to volunteer because I enjoy the experience. Distributing delegate bags, chairing technical sessions and hiking up mountains are just some of the adventures I have had as a volunteer. And the smiles at the end of the day, or hike, are what make the job so worthwhile.
