Lecture Tours
Lecture tours are one way to put a personal face on the CSPG as well as to communicate information about our industry to Canadian universities. The winner of the Link Award (best CSPG Technical Luncheon talk) and speakers recruited from the CSPG membership agree to donate their time, and are sent to schools across Canada. The ultimate goal is to address each geology department once per year. This year, three speakers were sent out in the spring on Outreach tours to visit a total of 13 universities.
There are several reasons why the CSPG sponsors these Outreach tours. One is to encourage students to consider a career in our industry by showing them that it can be challenging, high tech and diverse. Another is to coach them on how to find a job in the industry. A third reason is to listen to the students' feedback and to answer questions, essentially, to open lines of communication.

Lecture Reviews
What participating students and professors have had to say about the Lecture Series...
Paul Gammon, Carlton University ...We had a great turn out for Bruce's talk, and our students are still coming up to me and asking about some of the aspects in his talk. Most notably the diversity of skills required for what Bruce talked about. It was a highly successful talk and after talk discussion over Pizza.
Samuel Butler, University of Saskatchewan ...just wanted to report that Dr Putnam's talk was very well attended (I would estimate 45 or so people in attendance) and very well received. There were a large number of questions and many students stayed afterward to ask questions. Thanks again for including the University of Saskatchewan on the lecture tour.
Terry Russell, Stephen T. Johnston, University of Victoria ...Faculty, graduate students and undergraduates all agreed that (Bill Ayrton's) course was worthwhile. What a great opportunity for our students! ...It was wonderful being able to offer something of this nature on an industry so prevalent in our development. ...At the end of the lecture Bill had to finally excuse himself from the crowd of undergraduates who hung around hoping to procure a few more pearls of wisdom.
Francis Jones, University of British Columbia ...Many thanks for organizing Bill (Ayrton's) lecture, ... (it was) a very welcome initiative, especially for us out here at UBC because we do not have very good exposure to the petroleum sector. After listening to the "buzz" among students after the lecture (and later the next day), many have been inspired to go out and learn more about what they might do as professionals in the petroleum industries.
Rob Raeside, Acadia University ...In spite of being what seemed like the busiest day in several years, I would hazard to say that (Dr. Embry's) presentation was one of the best received this year. I can't stress heavily enough how much we value visits from outside organizations - they give our students an opportunity to see what is happening in the professional world, and many times they let our students see what career possibilities exist
Andy Pulham, Memorial University ...Just a short message to let you know that Ashton (Embry's) visit was extremely well received. In fact (it was) one of the best attended Departmental seminars in recent years. Thank you very much to the CSPG for sponsoring and organizing this event. I am especially grateful for the opportunity it provided to our students. I think the CSPG made a significant impact by hosting this event.
Simon Pattison, Brandon University ...Lisa Griffith gave an excellent presentation, which generated a lot of interest amongst our students and certainly opened their eyes to a wonderful career path. Please extend our gratitude to the CSPG Outreach program and the CSPG Executive. Thank you for making this event possible.
Colin Morancy, AAPG Student Chapter President, University of Manitoba ...Just wanted to send a quick thank you from the students at the University of Manitoba for organizing Lisa Griffith's visit here. Her talk was very informative and really showed us how ALL of the skills we learn are important. I think she really opened the minds of some of the younger students to the petroleum industry.
William Last, University of Manitoba ...I would just like to thank (Lisa Griffith) for the outstanding talk (she) gave. I am being completely honest when I say it was the single most impressive display of 'putting it all together' that I've seen in a long time. And it very much showed the students that the things they are learning in their coursed do have a very applied and practical use.
